Pitiwella and Boossa are two villages next to each other, one ends where the other begins. Although they are close to the popular Hikkaduwa, they are left unspoiled and only now tourists have started uncovering their hidden beauties. The tsunami completely destroyed the villages on the 26th of December 2004 causing the death of 28 people, so the government built new houses for the villagers a little bit farther inland. These days, the houses in front of the exotic beach are being reconstructed and are converted into beautiful and comfortable villas.
The idyllic beach is a piece of paradise and it is worth spending a few days just laying there, walking along the sea and talking to the fishermen, who are very friendly and kind. They will gladly give you any information and they may even invite you to join them in gathering the fishing nets. Surfing lessons are also available for beginners and advanced surfers; there is a very nice surfing spot just five minutes away.
For the walkers there is a walking path going around the village and the countryside around it and this provides a unique opportunity to meet the villagers and enjoy the beautiful landscape. For those who prefer cycling, there are bicycles for rent and a special route heading inland, which lead you in a calmer and different world. Very close to Boossa there is the small river called the Gin Ganga where you can enjoy a nice boat trip watching the unusual birds and many tropical plants.
For those who love fishing, sea-fishing tours can also been arranged for a special experience in the Indian Ocean.
In Pitiwella you can visit the Jayawardanaramaya Buddhist temple, which was made by the monk Medankara and his grandfather Mohandiram Mudeyanselage Janis de Silva in 1700 A.C. The Pagoda is the only one in Sri Lanka made out of stone in 1805 A.C. At that time the temple had only two buildings, but at this moment it has five buildings and a Bo-Tree. Today 8 monks are living there and they are fed by the villagers, twice a day, breakfast and lunch.
In the main road you will see also the Pinthaliya junction, which is the main junction in this area. Many years ago this junction was home to a small tank made from stone that was filled with fresh water where many people from many km away would come to drink. It was free for everyone. This water tank is called Pinthaliya. Unfortunately this water tank disappeared 20 years ago, and nobody knows who took it!
You can reach this exotic paradise from Colombo airport (140 km) either by local bus or train, with frequent departures. Also a private arrival transfer can be arranged with a private car, a mini bus or even a tuk-tuk.
Welcome to our paradise!
